About the Labour Action and Lockout Impacting Rail Services and Related Port Operations in the Region

We are writing to inform you about the labour action and lockout that could impact cargo movements through the Port of Vancouver in the coming days and the actions the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is taking to help manage ship traffic ahead of—and during—the disruptions.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference served a 72-hour strike notice to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) on Sunday. If an agreement is not reached in the next three days, labour action from railway workers will begin on August 22, 2024. CPKC and the Canadian National Railway (CN) also intend to lock workers out on this date unless an agreement is reached.

As the Trans Mountain pipeline enters the post construction phase, we find ourselves at a point of transition. We invite you to join us at the 2024 Line Wide Gathering to help us envision how the Indigenous Advisory and Monitoring Committee (IAMC) can best be of service to you going forward. Costs for accommodation and travel for up to two community representatives from each Nation will be covered by the IAMC-TMX. Today, we honour and remember the Indigenous women, girls, gender-diverse, and 2-Spirit people who continue to go missing and are murdered at an alarming and disproportionate rate. Marine monitoring has become a new form of protection in the face of increased TMX tanker traffic, which has risen from four ships per month to over 30, as well as other vessels crossing our territorial waters. These waters carry more than tankers and ships; they hold the safety of our communities. By monitoring these waters, we help safeguard our lands and people—especially women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. On this National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Gender Diverse People (MMIWG2S+), we highlight the connection between protecting our waters and protecting our people and communities. #SistersInSpirit #MMIWG2S

On May 05, the IAMC-TMX is observing Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S). The IAMC-TMX Socioeconomic Subcommittee is collaborating with Natural Resources Canada, the lead department for UNDA Action Plan Measure 12, to better understand and respond to the ongoing gendered and racialized violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people associated with the resource sector. On this important day, we encourage all Canadians to continue educating themselves about the MMIWG Calls for Justice and support MMIWG events in their local area.
